Prepare for your survey

Just like any sailing journey, it all starts with a check list.

Please use the list below to best prepare your vessel for inspection and survey.

If applicable, you will need to make arrangements with the marina to haul the vessel for bottom inspection, and retain a captain for sea trials. Legato Maritime can assist with this.

NOTE: Haul-out fees are separate from the cost of the marine survey.

  • If performing a sea trail, ensure the vessel has fuel, life jackets, and all USCG required safety gear.

  • Written authorization from the owner will be needed to board and/or to remove parts of the vessel. You will receive this form from Legato Maritime once the survey is set up.

  • Contact Information is available for both Buyer and Seller (if applicable.)

  • The following Documents will be onboard and available:

    • State Registration and/or USCG Documentation will be aboard and current.

      • If available, previous records should be present. (former titles, previous surveys, etc)

      • Owner/operator Manuals for engine(s), machinery, systems, and electronics.

      • Vessel Log and/or Service Log.

  • For Sailboats, running rigging is operational and sails are onboard and ready to hoist during sea trial.

  • ​ Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of all miscellaneous gear.

  • All locked compartments should be unlocked or combination/key location provided.

  • sea valves are operational

  • All equipment being sold with the vessel should be made available at the time of survey.

  • If performing a sea trail, ensure the vessel has fuel, life jackets, and all USCG required safety gear.

  • The boat should be clean and free of excessive personal items and accessories that may clutter any inspection area.

  • Hull sides and decks should be cleaned and free of excessive dirt and debris.

  • Batteries should be fully charged. If possible, the boat should be plugged into shore power.

  • Sewage holding tank(s) are empty.

  • Water tanks are filled to allow for systems test.

  • Ensure bilges are clean and free of debris or water.

  • Provide information of recent upgrades or replacements.

  • The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, flooring, etc. in order to gain access to suspected areas of interest.

  • Any dismantling and re-installation of parts should be performed by qualified personnel or vessel owner and is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey.
